Regarding especially the self-healing mats, you should store them lying because they dare not stoop. You should not store them near any heat source or direct sunlight.

A glass mat costs a little more but has since more funktioanlitet as much easier to keep clean, do not wear, when you cut it goes incredibly easy against the glass surface, which also keeps your blades last longer.
